6:36pm, sitting on the sofa contemplating if I should attend the 7pm film night or not. I have always had a fascination with North Korea, and even though this movie has promised torture and possibly death, I finally decided not to miss out on the opportunity and buckle up for a probably emotionally filled movie. The movie “The Net” is directed by Korean filmmaker Kim Ki-duk who is well-known for his artistic style film, instead of catering to mainstream media. Dawn, the rise of the sun, new beginnings, the joy of family, the tender caresses of a wife, this is how a fisherman by the name of  Nam Chul-woo begins his day. He will retrieve his net near the border between the North and South. As the boat goes into the distance, the border control asks what will he do if he crosses into the South, the fisherman states that he would stay with his boat(it took him 10 years of saving to earn that boat). Another film night, another film review, this week the film was entitled Foxtrot. Foxtrot (2017) is an Israeli film that has had many notable mentions.As I watched the 2 hour film I came to realise the effect of silence and that even though the dialogue in the film is kept to a minimum, the film remains poignant and succeeds in delivering the necessary emotions without saying a word. As an entry to the story, the film commences with the keywords “Mrs. Feldman”, and suddenly the audience realise that they sense the shock and devastation of these words that her son has died in the line of duty, without explicitly stating the obvious. The family wreaks with grief, the mother has been placed under sedation and the father is in such a state of shock, that he must be instructed to drink water every hour. The audience sees the inner grief being built up in the father and his need to release it, he goes to a window, will he jump? And then as he screams into the pillow beside...

Sometimes in life the flood of emotions that engulf you, leaves you speechless, however, there is this constant desire to express your feelings in words but there are no words. This is how I felt yesterday after embarking on watching the acclaimed film The Killing fields, the rollercoaster of emotions has left me without a beginning but nevertheless, I will try. The movie focuses on the Cambodian war between the Khmer Rouge and the governing party, where almost 25% of the population died as a result(many bodies were placed in fields, hence the name “Killing fields”). The perspective the movie takes is of American born Sydney Schanberg who comes to report on the war and Dith Pran who is the Cambodian journalist who will act as Sydney’s guide and translator. The movie focuses on the brotherhood of these two men and how each has to overcome great struggles, especially Dith Pran. Another film night, initially I was hesitant to join the film group this Sunday, as the theme was war and I was admittedly afraid of dealing with the reality of war and the pain and suffering that is the result. The documentary by the renowned Christian Frei, was entitled “War Photographer” which highlights the journey of the life of prolific photographer James Nachtwey. The film eerily begins with a man seemingly blocking out everything around him, is steadily focused on taking pictures, not only simply pictures but pictures that will make a difference and communicate to the whole world the calamities people face in war zones. There you see what once was, a beautiful painting that probably was from the renaissance time ruined, marred with dirt and soon will be consumed by the fire around it. On a lazy Sunday evening, though a struggle, I fought through the urges to lay in bed for the rest of the evening, to attend a film night at a local film school in my neighborhood. I have always liked dystopian films and looked forward to the 1971 film THX 1138 by George Lucas. For me the movie was great and I could see that George Lucas has a great mind that has influenced other movies such as Equilibrium. As the movie began (I was watching the director’s cut from 2004). It was for me a great parallel to what we as individuals might go through in order to conform or not to conform to the societal norms of today. The movie begins with everyone being ritualistic and going about the very mundane, organized way of life, so minimal the emotions are, as the mind is super controlled by strong doses of drugs.
