Travelling the World – Are there disadvantages?

It is has been a while since I have return to blogging, many things have occurred during the past year. I have moved once again and have used the past year to make myself acclimatized to a new culture and new language. This has been my fourth country and the sixth city that I have lived in.

With this in mind, I reflect on the need to make connections with locals, assimilate to their cultural nuances. For the first time in my life, I am no longer eager to meet new people, I am no longer interested in answering the same questions, where are you from? what is your job? Why did you choose to come here?  I think due to the fact that these new acquaintances will only remain in your life momentarily until you make the next move.

The long-term relationships that I have had and still maintain I will keep in my heart, however I wonder if I have room for more, as basic introductions and social gatherings seem mundane, repetitive and emotionally exhausting.

I think I now understand the term “Settling down”, to find your place in the world, create a family and basically bloom where you are sown. Where is my place though? Where can I truly bloom? I have been exposed to so many different cultures, I see the world so differently from most, and I never truly belong anywhere as I seem out of place, as I have lived so many different experiences, both the good and the bad.

Travelling the world is awesome, I would love to visit 100 countries, but I think there is a fundamental difference between visiting as a tourist and living amongst the people. To live in many different countries, I think comes at a cost, you lose a bit of your cultural identity and your once ability to have deepened connections with people become more superficial.

I encourage everyone to travel and have new experiences, however, make an effort to retain oneself, keep close ties to your cultural identity and visit home often it will keep you centered with a love, care and strength as you continue with your adventures.
