Hurricane Sandy

The effect of Sandy on Jamaica The  passage of Hurricane Sandy in Jamaica, has left the eastern parishes of Jamaica the hardest hit. Parishes such as St. Mary and Portland were severely impacted, especially the banana trees. St. Mary is the parish which supplies the nation with banana, and with most of the banana trees gone, I expect that the cost of bananas will go up. It has been estimated by the agricultural department that the cost of damage by Sandy is $Ja 700 million. I almost expect that by next week the cost of food will go up especially for ground provisions. Not to mention the damage to our already pothole ridden roads, I can imagine the areas hardest hit, have areas that are virtually impassable and accessible. How did the storm affect me?  Well  I am grateful to God that my region did not suffer in terms of flooding and  the lost of rooftops. However we were out of water, electricity, the telephone and the cellphones had no signal for approximately 4 days. I think du

If the Global Economy is Bad, How can we Travel!!!!

Intoxicated with natural beauty, luscious mountains, white sand beaches, Jamaica the third largest Caribbean island, is what we call paradise. Being a small island, our economy shifts with the tides of the bigger nations such as the Unites States of America and other European countries. According to Economy Watch ( 2 0 10) the major contributors of our GDP growth in Jamaica have been bauxite, tourism and remittances from abroad. 1 These sectors are the major providers of employment and sustainability to the country. These sectors have high involvement with the global market and therefore if there is a downward shift in the market then these sectors will feel the crunch and result in substantial loss of jobs and add to the negative growth of the economy. This essay will seek to highlight how the global economy has impacted Jamaica since the global meltdown that occurred in 2 008.  Since the global crisis in 2 008 the bauxite industry has taken the hardest blow, most of the bauxite

Climate Change, it will affect Travel in the future!!!...... Jamaica

Climate Change Introduction As a researcher who has been working in the field of science for the past 8 years I have developed a particular interest in climate change. In fact one of my major researches has been to develop ways of lowering the impact of greenhouse gases from major industries such as energy and petrol.  After doing this research and seeing the effects of climate change globally I have become more aware of the impact of climate change on my country, hence I will seek to discuss my concerns in this essay. Intoxicated with natural beauty, luscious mountains, white sand beaches, Jamaica the third largest Caribbean island, is what we call paradise. However, being a small island state has made it amongst the most vulnerable to climate change. Some of the inherent circumstances which have made Jamaica vulnerable are; the limited physical size, isolation of the island and  high susceptibility to natural hazards such as hurricanes, severe flooding and droughts . This bea

Safe Travel to the Middle East made more difficult!

One of the most publicized news items of recent times is that of the anti-Islam film “Innocence of Muslims” . This film has generated conflict in many Muslim nations resulting in the lost of many lives worldwide. The film was uploaded on youtube and came from obscurity on September 11, 2012, the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. This film depicts the Prophet Mohammed as a womanizer, child molester and murderer. Mohammed is the most revered prophet in Islam, and when the prophet was insulted, Muslims took to the streets in protest and incited violence against US embassies, killing American citizens and other foreigners. By using the critical analysis tool of Root  Cause analysis, which involves defining the problem, collecting data, identifying possible casual factors , identifying root causes, recommending and implementing solutions, ideas will be shared on the present conflict situation revolving around the anti –islamic video. The maker of the film N

No longer are many people using travel agents to book their tickets, instead the internet provides many great deals. Here are the tips I use when  looking for deals: - Normally it is best to book your tickets at least 3 months ahead so that you can get the best deals. - I check out many sites when I booking tickets over a period of time like www.expedia.com, www.ebookers.com etc. - If you live in Europe the best way to travel within Europe is by using the budget airlines www.ryanair.com and www.easyjet.com. - Sometimes air travel is shorter and cheaper than travel by train. - If you are under the age of 26 look out for deals for the youth

Travel Tips!

Image
Whether you are going on vacation for a short period or extended period, there are couple of tips I have: .... Before you travel make a list of things you need. .... Do not over pack with unnecessary things. .... Bring medication in case you get diarrhea or the flu. ... Arrive at the airport in time, you may never know what will delay you. ... If you know you are overweight in luggage, be nice to the flight attendant and she/he may be lenient.. lol ... If you have a complaint please be respectful with your queries you may proceed faster. ...  Have a back up plan of  how you will depart the airport after landing.

My Coq au vin Experience!

Before my journey to France, I was already intrigued by french culture and french food. I was so interested that I began to immerse myself the french way. One of the things I tried was cooking coq au vin which is chicken in wine. Basically you season your pieces of chicken with onions, seasoning salt, and whatever else you like. Then you place the chicken in a heated pan with oil, cook for about 45 minutes, then you simmer it down with the wine, kind of creating a sauce. This seemed pretty easy, however I added to much wine, after eating I felt extremely sleepy, basically I became drunk after cooking my coq au vin... Lol..Therefore for anyone cooking the french dish coq au vin, Please do not add too much wine !.

A Father Daughter Moment

My father is so instrumental in my life, he is my best friend. Today on his day off we started to watch the long time movie Air Force One starring Harrison Ford. As we watched the movie, we both tried to figure out what was happenning. We started to discuss if it is possible today to hijack the presidents plane, we both agreed it was vitually impossible. As the suspense built up we tried to decide who was going to be killed, hailed the President when he decided to stay on the plane and protected hostages. We were so into the movie... lol I was aware that we needed to run some errands in town, and watching this movie would probably delay us to the point where the stores would be closed. The suspense of the movie kept building and there was no way we would stop watching this movie. As the movie near to end, we tried to grab our clothes and multi-task. We only had twenty minutes before the store closed. We ran to the car together, and we drove without speeding and thank God we were able

Living in France, Vire

Image
As I started to teach my classes in France, there was one thing common to all the students, they are wanted to know about Jamaica. They would ask questions about Bob Marley, the weather, rastafarianism etc. To tell the truth I probably knew as little as them. Yes I am Jamaican, and I do listen to Bob Marley but I do not know about all the history. I gave the students the opportunity to listen to his music and they loved it. Being an assistant for the next several months was fun. I only worked a few hours per week and so I was able to travel to various cities. In addition there are many holidays in France, so I took advantage of each holiday. I visited places like Paris, Normandie, and Bretagne. These were some of the best moments in my life. I loved the food, the people and the beauty of France.

Leaving the nest

The first time I left my home for a long period, 8 months to be exact was when I got the opportunity to be a teaching assistant in France. I remember vividly being excited initially and as the days grew near to departure  I came to realisation that I would be totally on my own and that I would be totally responsible for every aspect of my life.  These included laundry, rent, cooking which I had no skills, and making new friends in a country completely unknown to me. Saying bye to my parents and bawling in the plane from the letter my mom wrote to me, I set off on my journey.  Travelling solo was not my first time, so getting to my destination was without incident. I remember I spoke little french, however I was able to buy my train tickets. From the train station Gare du Nord, I called my chaperone and I clearly stated to him that I was probably  going to be only back person descending from train at my stop LOL.... I arrived apprehensive at the school were I met another teaching assi

Celebration time for Jamaica!!

The performance of the Jamaican athletes in the Beijing Olympics was fantastic but was it possible for them to repeat in London? Well  they sure did! The Jamaican athletes basically humiliated its rival the USA. For a country that has a population of approximately 3 million to threaten a nation that has 313 million people, is nothing short of amazing.  There was a lot of pressure on Jamaican athletes to perform, especially Usain Bolt, but they did not disappoint.  The Jamaican euphoria began  with Shelly -Ann Fraser winning the first gold medal and VCB winning the bronze.  At that time I was not able watch and join the festivities as the race was shown during hours of Sabbath, but when I got home I was able to see the replay. Then for the rest of the week I was supporting my fellow-men as they participated in varying events. My parents were acting too poised  for each win, so I joined my friend via skype,  where we hollered and I knocked pot covers together. I have screamed so much t
